Shotley (Northumberland) burials and marriages

  • 877 burials at Shotley, Northumberland from 1690 to the end of 1812.
  • 532 marriages at Shotley from 1694 (plus one in 1670) to 1818

This church has been called St. John from when it was built in 1835, but the register dates from an earlier chapel here, apparently not dedicated to any particular saint. These burials are from Ron Nubley’s Index, which we are in the process of integrating into our collection, so when you buy one of these, you will immediately get the brief index entry, and the full entry will be transcribed and emailed to you within 3 days, at which point it becomes part of our database and you can view it again at any time.

As in County Durham, most burials of children between 1798 and 1812 contain the mother’s maiden name, and the maiden name of a deceased married woman is usually shown as well.

St. John’s Chapel burials 1772-1851

Replaced the burial index for St. John’s Chapel Weardale from 1772 to the end of 1851 with full data, so those 4,843 burials are immediately available. This one was interesting because of the unusually large amount of detail:

19 Jun 1827 Samuel Jobling, of West Black Dean, age: 50, found dead in bed at John Lowe`s public house – verdict `visitation of God`

In other words, he died suddenly with no visible cause.

As usual, burials from 1798 to 1812 usually contain the maiden name of the mother of a deceased child and often the maiden name of a deceased married woman. For example:

27 Oct 1812 Thomas Potts, of Frog Hall, age: infant, died 26 Oct, son of John Potts (miner) by his wife Mary nee Elliott

17 May 1812 Ann Nattrass late Heatherington, of St. Johns Chapel, age: 39, died 15 May, wife of John Nattrass (innkeeper)

Shotley (Northumberland) baptisms

  • Shotley (Northumberland) baptisms 1675-1812 (1,609 baptisms). This marks our first foray into Northumberland records. Shotley is adjacent to the County Durham parishes of Edmundbyers, Muggleswick, and Medomsley. We will follow this set shortly with the marriages and burials of Shotley parish for the same time period. These burials are from Ron Nubley’s West Durham Index, which we are in the process of integrating into our collection, so when you buy one of these, you will immediately get the brief index entry, and the full entry will be transcribed and emailed to you within 3 days, at which point it becomes part of our database and you can view it again at any time.
  • The Districts box on the Search form now contains a separate section for Northumberland at the bottom.
  • On the Parish Records page, you’ll see a new table at the bottom, to show you what Northumberland records we have (currently just Shotley baptisms, but this table will grow!). Also, the Transcription Samples section has been moved to its own page and added to the navigation menu.

Pittington marriages, Hartlepool burials

  • Pittington (St. Lawrence) marriages 1840-1905 (1,362 marriages). Does not include witnesses. Includes Belmont, Broomside, Elemore, Hallgarth, Hetton, Littletown, Pittington (Low, High, New, and Old), Low Pit, Pit Houses, Shadforth, Sherburn (Hill, House, and Pit), Whitwell, bits of adjacent parishes, and some visitors from distant places. Pittington is not in the IGI past 1812 and is not indexed anywhere else that we know of, so this collection should be a valuable data source for many researchers.
  • Hartlepool St. Hilda burials 1794-1844 (1,928 burials)
