Bywell St. Andrew contains the townships of Beal, Broomhaugh, Riding, Stocksfield Hall, and Styford. Whittonstall comprises the townships of Whittonstall and Newlands, and was a chapelry in the parish of Bywell St. Peter. These parishes, just beyond the northwest border of Durham, contained families who moved back and forth between these Northumberland parishes and the Durham parishes of Muggleswick, Edmondbyers, Hunstanworth, Consett, Chopwell, Leadgate, Ebchester, and Ryton.
