Coatham (YKS) marriages and burials

We have crept over the border of County Durham to the southeast and acquired the parish records of Coatham (Christ Church), Yorkshire, transcribed by a lovely volunteer in New Zealand:

  • 496 marriages 1854 - 1900 (March), including witnesses (so check for your ancestors using the witness search!)
  • 1,490 burials 1855 - 1902 (February)

Baptisms for the same period will follow shortly.

Coatham, in Guisborough district, is just across the River Tees from Hartlepool, on the coast, and residences mentioned include Coatham, Bishop Auckland, Darlington, Eston, Guisborough, Hurworth, Kirkleatham, Marske, Middlesbrough, Ormesby, Redcar, Saltburn, South Bank, Stockton-on-Tees, Upleatham, Warrenby, and West Hartlepool.

There is currently no way to limit your search to Guisborough district; I will fix that shortly. For now, just choose All Districts and look for Guisborough in the District column of the search results.

Pittington baptisms 1809-1812, 1876-1887

  • 76 baptisms from 1809 to 1812 - these are extremely valuable because they show the mother’s maiden name and birthplace, and most also show the name and occupation of the maternal grandfather (mother’s father)
  • 377 baptisms at Pittington St. Lawrence from 1876 (Oct) - 1887 (Jan)

Durham Primitive Methodist Circuit baptisms 1891-1910

1,600 baptisms from Jan 1891 to Oct 1910 on the Durham Primitive Methodist Circuit, which covered Durham City, Aldin Grange, Bearpark, Belmont, Brandon, Broompark, Broomside, Byron Pit, Carrville, Claypath, Coal Bank Terrace, Craghead, Crossgate, Daisy Hill, Dragon Villa, Edmondsley, Esh, Framwellgate, Gilesgate, Kimblesworth, Langley Park, Leamside, Moorsley (Low & High), Pittington (Low & High), Nevilles Cross, New Brancepeth, Pity Me, Rainton Gate, Sacriston, Sherburn, Sleetburn, Ushaw Moor, West Rainton, Whitwell Pit, and Witton Gilbert.

Due to the way Methodist baptism registers were created, this data set is not complete for this period. The next register will contain more baptisms from 1898-1904, and the next will have more baptisms from 1904-1913.

Barnard Castle marriages 1813-1837

767 marriages at Barnard Castle St. Mary - the cleric was kind enough to include the groom’s occupation, which was unusual for this period and certainly makes it easier for us to identify those elusive ancestors
