Bishopwearmouth Cemetery burials 1898-1900

4,501 burials at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery from 1 Jan 1898 to 12 May 1900. Some samples of the detail in these records:

  • 5 Jan 1898 Thomas Fowler Thatcher, of 10 Boughton Street, age: 67, grocer
  • 10 Jan 1898 Andrew Nicholson, of 55 Brougham Street, age: 8 weeks, son of Charles W. Nicholson
  • 9 Jan 1898 Lucy Long, of 31 Mordey Street, age: 51, wife of Dennis Long
  • 30 Jan 1898 Morris Frank, of 19 East Street, age: 4 months, son of David Frank, Quaker

This brings our research at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery to an end for the time being. We have transcribed 61,348 burials from the cemetery’s opening in 1856 to 12 May 1900. Now we will switch our attention to Sunderland cemetery in Stockton Road, Grangetown, which opened on June 2, 1858. This is the last of the big burial grounds in Greater Sunderland to be covered by us and will add immeasurably to our understanding of the city’s history.  Within a few months, genealogists will have a 99.9% chance of instantly locating the graves of their Sunderland ancestors who died before 1900.

Hetton-le-Hole baptisms & burials 1832-1835

786 baptisms and 436 burials at Hetton-le-Hole St. Nicholas from the time the church opened in Nov 1832 to the end of 1835, transcribed from the Bishop’s Transcript.  Previously part of the parish of Houghton-le-Spring, this church served the coal mining communities of Brick Garth, Cross Lanes, Downs Lane, Easington Lane, Elemore Vale, Eppleton, Hetton-le-Hole, High Downs, Low Downs, Low Moorsley, Lyons, Murton Lane, and South Hetton. According to Pigot’s 1834 Directory of County Durham, the population of Hetton expanded from about 500 in 1821 to nearly 8,000 in 1834, with most of those dependent on the colliery for a living, and the baptism register reflects that population exposion !

Stockton St. Thomas baptisms 1798-1806

970 baptisms at Stockton St. Thomas 1798-1806, from the Bishop’s Transcript. This parish is not indexed by the IGI nor by any other online index that we know of, and this is the period rich in parental detail. For example:

  • 8 Apr 1798 John Portus Walton, born 30 Jul 1797, son of William Walton (hatter, native of Hexham, Northumberland) by his wife Sarah Portus (native of this parish)
  • 17 Aug 1806 Isabella Lorrain, born 27 Dec 1805, 2nd daughter of Thomas Lorrain (husbandman, native of Dilstone in th parish of Corbridge, Northumberland) by his second wife Elizabeth Whorlton (native of this parish)

Since Stockton was a port town, it attracted settlers from many other regions, and you will find many parents who were born in Cumberland, Northumberland, Yorkshire, and places further away.
