3,945 burials in Sunderland Cemetery (Stockton Road, Grangetown) from 2 June 1858 to the end of 1864. Opened on June 2, 1858 to primarily serve Hendon and the East End, it now covers some 40 acres and is still in use. Most records include the address, profession, a child’s parent(s), husbands of deceased women, and some death causes – far more information than is contained in the church burial register. Some examples:

  • 8 Jun 1858 Christina Elizabeth Mordey, of Hendon Road, Bishopwearmouth, age: 5, daughter of Christopher Thompson Mordey (gentleman)
  • 29 Dec 1864 Elizabeth Brown, of Barrack Street, age: 73, widow of William Brown (pilot)
  • 9 Nov 1864 Samuel Ramsbottom, of 48 Silver Street, age: 25, butcher
  • 12 Nov 1864 John Garland, age: 20, mariner, a native of Castle Douglas, Scotland. Died at the Infirmary.

We intend to continue transcribing this cemetery until at least the year 1900.
