Monkwearmouth baptisms 1800-1812

2,200 baptisms at Monkwearmouth St. Peter for 1800-1812. This is the period rich in lovely details for genealogists. For example:

  • 6 May 1800 Jonathan Sowerby Stephenson, born 13 Nov 1799, 3rd son of Sowerby Stephenson (Shore roper, native of this parish) by his wife Isabella Wood (native of Sunderland, daughter of John Wood)

and some of the baptisms are for births as much as 20 years earlier:

  • 5 Feb 1801 Sarah Stewart, born 27 Sep 1780, 1st daughter of William Stewart (Monkwearmouth shipowner, native of this parish) by his wife Catherine Welch (daughter of William Welch of Monkwearmouth Shore)

Remember, you can search for all the children of a set of parents or of just a mother or father. Try setting up a search with these parameters:

  • Search In: Baptisms
  • District: Sunderland
  • Father’s First Name: wil*
  • Father’s Last Name: st*rt
  • Mother’s First Name: cath*
  • Mother’s Last Name: wel*

and you will uncover 5 baptisms for children of the above William Stewart & Catherine Welch. Expand your Search In box to All Parish Records and you will also get burials for 2 of their infant children.

Durham Diocese marriage bonds 1760-1767

3,117 marriage bonds issued by the Durham Diocese 1760-1767.

Marriage bonds often provide ages, occupations, and place of residence for the bride and groom during a period when marriage registers did not provide that information. Please read the Marriages Bonds section of the Transcription Samples page for a description of what information is found in bonds, allegations, and associated documents, and how we present that information.

The Diocese of Durham covered all of County Durham and parts of Northumberland and North Yorkshire. Marriage bonds were not issued on a per-district basis, so the District filter is ignored when the marriage bond database is searched.

These records are from Ron Nubley’s Index, which we are in the process of integrating into our collection, so when you buy one of these, you will immediately get the brief index entry, and the full entry will be transcribed and emailed to you within 3 days, at which point it becomes part of our database and you can view it again at any time.

Middleton-in-Teesdale & St. John’s Chapel Weardale burials

Apparently we never updated the Parish Records page when these parishes got their burials added in 2008, and that page said these burials stopped at 1770. This has now been corrected. We actually have:

  • Middleton-in-Teesdale burials 1653 – 1851
  • St. John’s Chapel, Weardale burials 1712 – 1851

Whickham baptisms & burials 1852-1853

Extending our collection of Whickham St. Mary records to include 1852-1853, from the bishop’s transcript:

  • 334 baptisms
  • 257 burials

In Gateshead district, this parish listed residents of Crook Gate, Dunston, Fellside, Teams (High & Low), Lobley Hill, Marley Hill, Norwood, Street Gate, Sunniside, Swalwell, and of course Whickham.

We now have a continuous run of Whickham baptisms and burials from 1576 to 1853. Everything but the last 2 years is from the parish register. (Our Parish Records page has been incorrectly showing that we had Whickham burials only up to 1770, but in fact we have had the index to the burials through the end of 1851 online for more than a year!)
