Monk Hesleden baptisms 1798-1836 updated

Similar to our recent problem with Easington baptisms, we discovered a problem with Monk Hesleden St Mary baptisms from 1798-1812, in which the father’s nativity and occupation had been accidentally omitted during our data upload process. These have now been added back in (the additions were mostly occupations, as father’s nativity was not listed in most of these baptisms). We also found one baptism that had been missed, and made corrections to several others. We have tried to notify all customers who bought these records. We also added father’s occupations to all the Monk Hesleden St Mary baptisms 1813-1836. If you purchased a baptism at Monk Hesleden St Mary between 1798 and 1836 inclusive, you should log in and check My Previous Orders to see if any fatherly details have been added to your record.

For example:

  • 28 Mar 1812 Ann Trotter, of Sheraton, born 25 Mar 1812, daughter of Thomas Trotter (farmer, native of St. Andrew’s Auckland) & Ann nee Maughan (native of Eldon, parish of St. Andrew’s Auckland)
  • 8 Jul 1827 Henry Robinson Tattersall, of High Hesleden, born 08 Aug 1821, son of William Tattersall (belonging to the Preventive Water Guard) & Sarah

Durham St. Giles baptisms & burials 1819-1835; marriage witnesses added 1813-1837

773 baptisms and 738 burials at St. Giles in Durham city, covering 1819-1835, from the Bishop’s Transcript. We also took this opportunity to add the witnesses to the 323 marriages for 1813-1837, giving you 752 more opportunities to find your ancestor witnessing a marriage. In addition to St. Giles, residences mentioned include Belmont, Carrville, Claypath, Gilesgate, Gilesgate Moor, Kepier, Old Durham, Pittington, and Durham St. Nicholas.

Some sample baptisms:

  • 21 Feb 1819 Elizabeth [Robinson/Elliot], child of John Robinson (upholsterer) & Jane Elliot
  • 23 Jun 1822 William Cornwell, of Claypath, born 18 Jul 1807, son of John Cornwell (soldier of the 5th Dragoon gards) & Ann
  • 1 May 1828 John Brown, of St. Giles, born 9 Apr 1828, child of Nathaniel Brown (chorister of the Cathedral) & Hannah [Johanna]
  • 31 Mar 1833 Wallace Burton, of St. Giles, child of Absolom Burton (miller) & Isabella
  • 8 Mar 1834 Dorothy Jane Veitch, of Gilesgate, born 14 Feb 1832, child of John Harding Veitch (Editor of the Durham Chronicle) & Jane

and burials – most in 1819 had some sort of description, but after that, they become terse :

  • 3 Jan 1819 Thomas Gargate, of St. Giles, age: 30, cordwainer
  • 14 Jul 1819 Sarah Humble, of St. Giles, age: 42, wife of Flower Humble
  • 26 Nov 1828 Ann Tilly, of St. Giles, age: 90
  • 15 Aug 1834 George Kelsey Davison, of St. Giles, age: 10 months

Merrington baptisms & burials 1822-1832, witnesses added to marriages 1822-37

534 baptisms and 299 burials at Merrington St. John the Evangelist, covering 1822-1832, from the Bishop’s Transcript. We also took this opportunity to add the witnesses to the marriages for 1822-1837, giving you an additional 323 instances of names to search in for evidence of your ancestor’s existence.

Some samples:

  • baptised 7 Apr 1822 Viletta Ingram, of Merrington, daughter of James Ingram (potter) & Hannah
  • baptised 31 Dec 1824 Matthew Raisin, of Windlestone, son of Charles Raisin (game keeper) & Ann
  • baptised 13 May 1832 Ruth Roxby, of Ferryhill, daughter of Anthony Roxby (schoolmaster) & Jane

A few burials had relationships or other descriptions, but most were terse, as is typical of this period:

  • 22 Jun 1825 Thomas Thompson, of Ferryhill, age: 37, mason who was accidentally killed on 21st day of June by soil falling upon him in a quarry in this township of Ferryhill
  • buried 5 Jan 1827 Hannah Ingram, of Merrington, age: 11 months, daughter of James Ingram
  • 17 Dec 1828 Henry Ingram, of Merrington, age: 107
  • 30 Apr 1832 George Peacock, of Rushyford, age: 6 months

This marriage looks like several relatives of the groom were present:

  • 5 Apr 1825 Martin Lonie, of Sunderland married Sarah Nelson, of this parish, by licence
Witnesses: Isabella Lonie, Elizabeth Lonie, Joseph Lee, Ann Newby, William Lonie

Easington baptisms 1798-1812, 1833, and 1837 corrected & updated

We discovered a problem with Easington St Mary the Virgin baptisms from 1798-1812, in which the father’s nativity and occupation had been accidentally omitted during our data upload process. These have now been added back in. We have tried to notify all customers who bought these records, but if you were not notified, and you purchased a baptism at this church between 1798 and 1812 inclusive, you might want to log in and check My Previous Orders to see if any fatherly details have been added to your record. We also found one baptism that had been missed, and made corrections to several others. We also added father’s occupations to all the baptisms in 1833 and 1837 (and we’ll continue to add occupations to other years in this parish as we have time).
