Luckily for us researchers, the cleric started including mother’s maiden names in baptisms in Aug 1797, several months before it was required.  Some samples:

  • buried 6 Jan 1798 Ann Nicholson late Hedley, of Collier Row, age: 63, died 4 Jan, widow of Edward Nicholson (pitman, deceased)
  • buried 6 Oct 1799 John Gustard, of Bunker Hill, age: 11, died 5 Oct, son of Henry Gustard (brakeman, native of Hag House) by his wife Ann formerly Holt, native of Lambton
  • 3 Dec 1799 William Ranson, of Newbottle, age: 77, died 1 Dec, labourer, native of Newbottle
