636 baptisms at Durham St. Margaret’s chapelry in the parish of St. Oswald, spanning 1787-1797.  Some samples:

  • 7 Nov 1787 Mathew Harburtle, son of Jane Harburtle, AB [= a bastard]
  • 6 Jul 1790 Charles Tinkler, son of John Tinkler & Ann, NB: this child was born at Darlington at or about the month of Sepr 1786 & presented in this chapel the sixth day of July 1790 being the day this childs mother was buried
  • 3 Jun 1792 William & Ralph Friend, born 11 Feb, sons of Ralph Friend & Dorothy
  • 1 Oct 1797 Dorothy Chapman Richardson, born 16 Apr 1797, daughter of Thomas Richardson & Elizabeth

These are from a combination of the parish register and the Bishop’s Transcript. Specifically, from the BT are Mar 1787-Mar 1788, Mar 1791-Mar 1792, 1794, 1796-97. From the parish register: Mar 1788-Mar 1791, Mar 1792-1793, 1795. We did extensive cross-checking of the BT entries against the parish register and found no appreciable differences except for this interesting entry, in which the BT gave more information than the parish register originally had:

  • 23 Mar 1788 Hannah Towler [Persons], daughter of William Tower [Towler] & Elizabeth Persons, AB [= a bastard]
[Note: There is no mention of bastardy or the mother's maiden surname in the parish register, only in the Bishop's Transcript. Also the BT has the father's surname as Tower.]
