Barnard Castle baptisms 1811-13, burials 1807-1812

Filling the gaps at Barnard Castle St. Mary in Teesdale district, we have:

  • 324 baptisms covering 1811-1813, so we now have baptisms here for 1798-1846
  • 491 burials covering 1807-1812, so we now have burials here 1798-1846

Sample baptisms:

  • 24 Mar 1811 Henry Hopper Hall, of Barnard Castle, born 15 Nov 1810, 2nd son of Ralph Hall (sawier, native of West Butts Field in the parish of Lanchester) by his wife Elizabeth Lee formerly Hewitt (native of Harwood in the parish of Middleton in Teesdale)
  • 29 May 1812 William Jackson, of Barnard Castle, born 5 May, 2nd son of Newby Spark Jackson (flaxdresser, native of Barnard Castle) by his wife Elizabeth Carter (native of Newsham, Yorkshire)
  • 18 Jan 1813 Thomas Bousfield, of Dent-Gate, son of Hodgson (blacksmith) & Mary Bousfield

These were transcribed from the Bishop’s Transcript except for most of July-Sept 1812 which came from the parish register because it was missing from the BT. There were some interesting errors which we checked in the parish register and found them to be errors or anomalies there too, so we added Notes to those records. For example, there is the following sequence of events:

  • In Nov 1807, Thomas Brownless married Johannah Bell at Barnard Castle. In 1811, they baptized their first daughter:
    • 10 Aug 1811 Mary Brownless, of Hedderic Grange, born 16 Jun, 1st daughter of Thomas Brownless (farmer, native of Hunda, Yorkshire) by his wife Johannah Bell (native of Marwood)
  • The following year, they baptized a 2nd child, inexplicably also referred to as their first daughter, but more importantly, the father is called George in both the parish register and the Bishop’s Transcript:
    • 27 Dec 1812 Hannah Brownless, of Stainton, 1st daughter of George Brownless (farmer, native of Stainton) by his wife Joanna Bell (native of Marwood Park)
  • One might think perhaps Thomas had died and Joanna had remarried, but there are at least 4 later baptisms for Thomas & Joanna Brownless at Hederick Grange, and none for George & Joanna, so we altered this record to add Thomas as a searchable father and to add an explanatory note:
    • 27 Dec 1812 Hannah Brownless, of Stainton, 1st daughter of George [Thomas] Brownless (farmer, native of Stainton) by his wife Joanna Bell (native of Marwood Park)
[Note: Father was Thomas Brownless at marriage and earlier & later baptisms.]
  • For some reason, Hannah was the only child supposedly born at Stainton instead of Hederick Grange, and the only child to have her father listed as George instead of Thomas. Who knows why these kinds of clerical errors occur? Did the priest note the baptism on a scrap of paper in his pocket and then, when entering it into the register, get the details mixed up with another baptism?

Sample burials:

  • 7 Jun 1807 John Weatherilt, of Barnard Castle, age: 22, died 5 Jun, son of William Weatherilt (weaver) by his wife Sarah late Bowman
  • 9 Feb 1811 Alice McLane, of Barnard Castle, age: 109, died 7 Feb, wife of Hugh McLane (pensioner)
  • 19 Oct 1812 Mary Sweeten late Spensley formerly Croft, of Barnard Castle, age: 43, died 17 Oct, wife of Robert Sweeten (weaver)
  • 29 Oct 1812 John Colpitts, of Streatlam, age: 40, Esq’r, bachelor, agent to the Honourable Earl of Strathmore, died 23 Oct at Wemmergill in the parish of Romaldkirk, Yorkshire

Wallsend marriages 1813-1837

1,335 marriages at Wallsend St. Peter in Tynemouth district, Northumberland from 1 Jan 1813 to 30 June 1837, where our previous data set began. The witnesses are included. These were transcribed from the Bishop’s Transcript but we ended up checking most of them against the parish register and making corrections per the register as needed.  Here are some samples:

  • 09 Jan 1813 John Gallon, of this parish married Margaret Irwin, of this parish, by banns with consent of parents
    Witnesses: John Mordue, William Simpell
  • 12 Apr 1823 Thomas Harland, of Long Benton married Dorothy Wilkinson, of this parish, by banns
    Witnesses: Stephen Wilkinson, Joseph Mordue
  • 24 Oct 1834 Joel Derwent (bachelor), of this parish married Jane Wolfenden (widow), of the Chapelry of St John in the town & County of Newcastle upon Tyne, by licence
    Witnesses: Elizabeth Carr, William Crawford
  • 11 Feb 1837 John Fenwick (bachelor), of the Chapelry of St Hilda South Shields married Mary Cook (spinster), of this parish, by licence
Witnesses: Elizabeth Turnbull, Deborah Aydon, Richard Cook, Robert Cook

When we compared these marriages to the transcript available at GenUKI, we found many errors in that transcript, including some completely incorrect names and two marriages that had been omitted from that transcript. We hope this new transcription will aid our northern researchers and perhaps clear up some questions they might have had.

We now have Wallsend marriages for 1813-1871.

Redmarshall baptisms & burials 1770-1812

302 baptisms and 221 burials at Redmarshall St. Cuthbert in Stockton district, covering 1770-1812. Most of these are from the Bishop’s Transcript except for 1772, 1775, and burials in 1808, which are from the parish register. Residences mentioned include Bishopton, Carleton, Norton, Ox Eye, Redmarshall, Stillington, Stockton, and Whitton.

The clerk at Redmarshall was not diligent about recording all the details in the 1798-1812 period. For 1801-1808, most have birth dates, mother’s maiden surnames, and parental birthplaces, but a few do not. Here are some sample baptisms:

  • 13 Aug 1770 Lois Hardy, of Whinny Hill, daughter of William & Margaret Hardy
  • 6 Jun 1782 Nathaniel Calvert, of Stillington, son of John & Mary Calvert
  • 21 Nov 1799 Daniel Shepherd, of Carleton, son of Daniel & Mary Shepherd
  • 3 Dec 1802 John Gibson, born 1-Dec 1802, 2nd son of Jeffrey Gibson (native of Redmarshall in the County of Durham) by his wife Jane Lambert (native of Cockfield)
  • 19 Mar 1807 Alice Lightfoot, born 15-Mar 1807, 2nd daughter of Edward Lightfoot (labourer, native of North Coughton) by his wife Jane Finley (native of Marton in Yorkshire)
  • 12 Mar 1810 Clara Faber, born 12-Mar 1809, 1st daughter of the Revd. G.S. Faber (Rector of this parish) & Eliza Sophia Faber

Sample burials:

  • 28 Nov 1770 Ann James, of Carleton, age: 95, widow, P [poor]
  • 13 Mar 1791 Christopher Hartburn, of Stillington, son of Matthew & Ann Hartburn
  • 11 Dec 1803 Harriet Watson, of Redmarshall, age: 4 months, died 9 Dec, 2nd daughter of Christopher Watson (late of Stainthorpe) by his wife Mary Willis ([native] of Brancepeth)
  • 10 Jan 1812 William Lynn, of Embleton township, Sedgefield parish, age: 82, farmer, died 7 Jan

Marriage witnesses added: Durham St. Oswald, Croxdale, Auckland St. Helen, Washington, etc.

Added witnesses to the following existing marriages:

  • Croxdale 1813-1837
  • Washington 1836-1837 (now there are witnesses from 1813 to mid-1837)
  • Auckland St. Helen 1813-1837
  • Gateshead St. Mary 1825-1826
  • Lanchester 1813-1815

Wolviston baptisms 1805, 1840-1871

587 baptisms at Wolviston St. Peter, a chapelry of Billingham parish in Stockton district, covering 1840-1871, plus the first half of 1805 which was missing from our earlier transcription of the Bishop’s Transcript.  The first half of 1805 and the years 1840, 1859-64, and 1866-68 are from the parish register; the rest are from the Bishop’s Transcript. People who baptized their children at Wolviston lived primarily at Newton Bewley and Wolviston. Other residences mentioned include Annigate or Hannagate House, Burn Tofts, Coal Lane Lodge, Hall’s Field, Harestone, High Grange, Low Grange, Marsh House, Newton Hansard, Roseville, Viewly Hill, Wolviston Hurl, Wolviston Mill, and Wynyard Park.

Sample baptisms:

  • 9 Feb 1840 Elizabeth Oyston, of Wolviston, daughter of James (labourer) & Hannah Oyston
  • 9 Mar 1856 Louisa Prudence Pipe, of Wolviston, daughter of Benjamin (market gardener) & Elizabeth Pipe
  • 24 Feb 1869 Henry Mainwaring, of Wolviston, son of John (brick maker) & Margaret Mainwaring

Durham St. Oswald baptisms 1794-1869, burials 1794-1868

A huge & exciting package from St. Oswald’s in Durham city, from the Bishop’s Transcript:

  • 6,812 burials covering 1794-1868
  • 6,527 baptisms covering 1794-1869
  • The year 1844 is missing from the above, which we will rectify soon.

Durham St. Oswald’s is not indexed by the IGI later than 1751, so these records have not been widely available before this release. Residences mentioned (besides major streets in St. Oswald parish) include Aldin Grange, Auton Stile, Bailey, Baxter Wood, Bishopwearmouth, Brancepeth, Brandon, Broom, Burnhall, Butterby, Claypath, Crossgate, Croxdale, Elvet Bridge, Elvet Moor, Farewell Hall, Framwellgate, Gilesgate, Harbour House, Houghall, Langley, Leases or Leazes Place, Milburngate, Moorsley Banks, New Inn, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, New Elvet, North Bailey, Old Elvet, Old Durham, Palace Green, Relly Mill & Cottages, Sherburn House & Hospital, Shincliffe, Stonebridge, Sunderland Bridge, Tudhoe, Viewly Grange, Wall Nook, the adjacent parishes and chapelries of St. Giles, St. Margaret’s, St. Mary le Bow, and St. Nicholas, plus the institutions of the Workhouse or Poorhouse, Gaol, and Prison.

Of course the 1798-1812 baptisms and burials are full of rich detail, but we were also pleased to find that in post-1812 burials, the clerk continued the practice of listing parents of children, husbands of deceased women, and occupations of men, until early March 1829.

Sample burials:

  • 10 Apr 1794 John Southers [Sutherst], master of the Jenny Spinners at the Abbey Mill
  • 26 Dec 1797 Catharine Macdonald, infant daughter of Donald Macdonald (Esquire, papist)
  • 2 Jan 1798 John Hopper, of Hallgarth Street, age: 1, died 1 Jan, son of Ralph Hopper (joiner) & Thomasine his wife late Anderson
  • 4 Mar 1800 Mrs Magdalen Barcroft Salvin late Isherwood, of St Margarets chapelry, age: 33, died 28 Feb, a native of Maple in Cheshire, wife of Mr. Henry Salvin (one of the proprietors of the cotton manufactory in this parish)
  • 12 Jul 1812 Richard Huntley, of Sherburn, age: 25, a farmer, native of the city of Canterbury, died 10 Jul
  • 27 Sep 1812 Margaret Whitehead late Burnet, of St. Nicholas parish, age: 35, died 24 Sep, native of this parish, wife of Benjamin Whitehead (mill-wright, native of Hartlepool)
  • 12 May 1815 Mr. George Fothergill, of St. Nicholas parish, age: 54, surgeon
  • 6 Dec 1818 Ambrose Tiplady, of New Elvet, age: 8, son of John (joiner) & Mary Tiplady
  • 15 May 1822 Maria Horner, of Elvet Moor house, age: 45, wife of Joseph Horner
  • 28 Nov 1828 Elizabeth Featherstonhaugh, of New Elvet, age: 101, widow
  • 4 Apr 1839 Thomas Jackson, age: 57, found drowned at Butterby Ferry
  • 3 Dec 1848 William Hope, of Kent’s Lunatick Asylum, Gatesfead Fell, age: 24
  • 29 Dec 1859 Hannah Sewell, of New Elvet, age: 79
  • 21 Dec 1868 Stephen Thompson, of Church Street, age: 82

In the baptisms, very few mothers were listed in 1794-1797, except for when the child was illegitimate and only the mother was shown. Sample baptisms:

  • 23 Feb 1794 John Armitage, son of David Armitage (first Regiment of West York Militia)
  • 21 May 1797 Elizabeth Stonehouse, illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Stonehouse
  • 12 Jan 1798 Edward Baverstock, born 1 Sep 1796, 1st son of The Revd. William Baverstock (minor canon of the Cathedral Church of Durham, native of Burslem, Staffordshire) by his wife Elizabeth late Cook heretofore Watson (native of Monkwearmouth, Durham)
  • 30 Aug 1812 Joseph Plimmer, born 9 Jun, 3rd child of Timothy Plimmer (pitman, native of Pontsbury Shropshire) by his wife Rachel Vint (native of Barnard Castle)
  • 1 Jun 1825 Cornelius Fisher, of New Elvet, born 10-Aug 1822, son of Charles (gunsmith) & Elizabeth Fisher
  • 12 May 1833 John Edward Peele, of Hallgarth St., child of Edward (singing man of the cathedral) & Ann Peele
  • 19 Jun 1848 Charlotte Amelia Cotton, of Old Elvet, daughter of Nathanael Cotton (student at Durham University) & Caroline Margarette Cotton
  • 11 Apr 1855 Mary Mensforth, of Old Elvet, daughter of John (officer at the Gaol) & Mary Mensforth
  • 28 Nov 1869 Agnes Elizabeth Morley, of Church Street, daughter of Richard (upholsterer) & Mary Morley, [bap'd on] Advent Sunday

The next baptism illustrates an error in the parish register – the Bishop’s Transcript is an exact copy of the register, but the register is wrong. There are numerous baptisms in this period for Samuel Strong & Ann Blacket, both from Ryton, yet this baptism lists the surname as Stone. We found half a dozen similar errors – incorrect given names or surnames for mothers or fathers – and added notes and cross-indexing to the correct names for all of these:

  • 23 May 1802 Mary Ann Stone [Strong], born 10 May, 2nd child of Samuel Stone [Strong] (country-man, native of Ryton in the county of Durham) by his wife Ann Blacket (native of the same place)
[Note: Surname is Strong in other baptisms.]

We will work on filling the gaps in the earlier years from the parish register and hope to release 1773-1793 and 1844 within a month.

Wallsend marriages 1837-1871, baptisms 1872-1900

At Wallsend St. Peter in Tynemouth district, Northumberland:

  • 2,178 marriages from July 1837 to the end of 1871, from the Bishop’s Transcript
  • 3,020 baptisms from the parish register covering 1872-1900

These are fully detailed marriages with fathers, ages, occupations, and witnesses. Sample marriages:

  • 16 Jul 1837 William Bellerby (bachelor, druggist), age 20, of Newcastle, son of Michael Bellerby (cartwright), married Rebecca Dobinson (spinster), age 19, of Wreckenton, daughter of Luke Dobinson (miner)
    Witnesses: William Fenwick, Joseph Mordue
  • 20 Mar 1852 John Welsh (widower, pitman), age 65, of this parish, son of John Welch (pitman), married Adah Brown (widow), age 54, of this parish, daughter of William Sterling (papermaker)
    Witnesses: Joseph Mordue, Mary Charlton
  • 10 June 1871 William James Peacock (bachelor, mariner), age 26, of this parish, son of William Peacock (tobacco pipe maker), married Mary Elder (widow), age 32, of this parish, daughter of Thomas Nightingale (farmer)
Witnesses: Elizabeth Jane Wake, Edward Wake

The 2nd marriage above is an example of a good find for some researcher, as it gives the fathers of 2 people who were born in 1787 and 1798 respectively. Their parents would not have been named if they had married in their 20s or 30s, before 1837. Second and third marriages after 1837 are often good sources of fathers’ names which cannot be found any other way.

Sample baptisms:

  • 14 Jan 1872 Ellen Wandlass Wilson, of Wallsend, child of George (foreman in lead works) & Ellen Wilson
  • 15 Oct 1879 David Todd Liddel, of Willington Quay, born 22 Sep 1879, child of Lancelot (boat builder) & Lucy Liddel
  • 02 Apr 1892 Walker Moffatt Fairgrieve, of 8 Second Street, Wallsend, born 05 Mar 1892, child of John Laybourne Fairgrieve (caulker) & Mary Jane Fairgrieve
  • 20 Oct 1900 Mary Anne Rebecca Higgins Bell, of 1 Ford Terrace, born 23 Sep 1900, child of Robert Edward Bell (boilermaker) & Mary
