Penshaw baptisms, marriages, burials

Penshaw All Saints (not in the IGI, not searchable anywhere else online that we know of !)

  • 840 baptisms 1787-1797
  • 258 marriages 1785-1796
  • 642 burials 1785-1797

In Oct 1797, the Penshaw clergy members started making an attempt to comply with Bishop Barrington’s edict concerning the recording of mother’s maiden names and nativity of parents. The information is sporadic at first - sometimes it’s there, sometimes not, sometimes they recorded the current residence instead of the birthplace of the father, and sometimes you can’t tell for sure which they meant! Before this time, “son of Walton Shields of Penshaw” meant the father lived at Penshaw currently. Later, the phrase “Walton Shields native of this chapelry” would be used, making it clearer, but in this transition period, the usage is mixed. We have taken “of Penshaw” to mean the current place of residence and “native of Penshaw” to mean, obviously, the birthplace of the parent. It is possible that in some cases what appears to be the current residence may in fact be the birthplace of the father.

West Hartlepool Christ Church baptisms 1864-1872

2,210 baptisms at Christ Church, West Hartlepool from Mar 1864 to Sep 1872. These baptisms usually include the child’s birth date. For example:

  • 4 May 1864 Louis Julius Mylius, of Sidney St., born 19 Jan 1864, child of Charles Nicholas Mylius (fitter) & Nathalie Hedevig Mylius

We realize there is a small gap in our data between early 1862 and early 1864, and we will be working to fill that soon.

Durham Diocese marriage bonds 1704-1712

Marriage bonds issued by the Durham Diocese 1704-1712 (1,028 bonds). There were no surviving bonds for the period 24 Mar 1704 - 25 Mar 1706 or 24 Mar 1708 - 29 Mar 1709.

Please read the Marriages Bonds section of the Transcription Samples page for a description of what information is found in bonds, allegations, and associated documents, and how we present that information.

The Diocese of Durham covered all of County Durham and parts of Northumberland and North Yorkshire. Marriage bonds were not issued on a per-district basis, so the District filter is ignored when the marriage bond database is searched.

These records are from Ron Nubley’s Index, which we are in the process of integrating into our collection, so when you buy one of these, you will immediately get the brief index entry, and the full entry will be transcribed and emailed to you within 3 days, at which point it becomes part of our database and you can view it again at any time.
